Our Mission

We began informally as a small group just talking about how to change the herbicide use policy in Limerick. We never would have guessed how much this community has grown, and how many people in Limerick City and County are against the use of pesticides. It’s time the Limerick City and County Council start listening.

Our mission is simple: lets end the use of all pesticides in public spaces. The practice is dangerous and out-dated. There are plenty of alternatives such as Foamstream, mechanical weeding machines, mulch, salt, organic weedkiller (vinegar based). Or very simply, we could let the weeds be! Counties Cork, Wicklow, Dublin, and Westmeath all have robust no-pesticide use policies, and they are managing just fine! It can be done in other counties in Ireland.

Can we all start seeing ‘weeds’ as just a part of our world? Do they all need to be dowsed in harmful chemicals? Can we leave the dandelions growing in the foot paths? Can we get used to green spaces having a bit of a wild element?

We’ve decided to make it our mission to change the way its done here in Limerick. We aim to integrate the policies of these forward-thinking counties into Limerick.

We need all the help we can get. If you’d like to get involved, just an email would be helpful, head over to the GET INVOLVED page for more details.

“The desire to maintain a tidy appearance in estates, along roadsides, in town centres and in public parks, playgrounds and cemeteries, with public support, has led to the use of glyphosate and other herbicide products. A more nuanced approach is now needed, balancing the need for maintenance with the more urgent requirement to protect and provide habitat for biodiversity. In order to reduce the use of glyphosate Wicklow County Council is examining alternative methods of weed control, eg: use of Foamstream and the mechanical removal of weeds. Wicklow County Council’s policy is to eliminate where possible the use of glyphosate, however it must be recognised that there are situations where there is no alternative to the use of glyphosate, eg: the control of invasive species.”
